Meet our minister
Reverend Dr. Nigel Parker
Nigel Parker has been the minister of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sherbrooke since July 2021.
Born in England, he was raised in Scotland since the age of 12. After studying chemical engineering (unsuccesfully!) he taught chemistry in the Caribbean for a year and did some church social care work in Glasgow.
Nigel was raised in a Christian home and his faith was further shaped by teenage summer missions and student involvement with the UCCF (= IVCF in Canada). Following the Lord’s calling, he trained for ministry in the Church of Scotland at Aberdeen University (BD, MTh). He was then ordained and inducted to a congregation in Aberdeen.
As well as serving that congregation for more than 25 years, Nigel was active in the presbytery, in the training of ministers and also in ministry to Deaf people. He also earned a DMin from Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey. The story of Nigel’s call to Sherbrooke goes back 40 years to meeting Champlain Community College students on an exchange program in Jamaica. To transfer to the PCC, he had to undertake Canadian church studies online at Vancouver School of Theology. To these he added further credits, including some from Regent College Vancouver, to recently complete a Diploma in Denominational Studies.
He learnt French at school but did more language study both before and since coming to la belle province. He now has French at level B2/C1 (avancé intermediaire ) on the Échelle québécois des niveaux de compétence en français.
He was recently elected as the moderator of the presbytery of Quebec. His favourite Bible verse?
The apostle Paul wrote counsel to a younger pastor called Timothy “..as for you, continue in what you have learned, knowing those from whom you have learnt it and how from infancy you have known the Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation.” 2 Timothy 3.15.
